I have my learner licence
You've already shown you can do the most important part of riding a motorcycle – you know how to learn. Next up is getting your restricted licence.
Improve your riding skills and know the rules of the road
Before you tackle the challenge of getting your restricted licence, make sure you're ready for the next step. Keep up to date with the road code and keep practicing those questions.
Ride Forever is here to support you through your journey.
Going from a learner to a restricted licence
Thinking of upgrading your learner licence to a restricted licence? You have two choices for your next step:
Option 1
Competency Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) R (Restricted). You can take this at any time after you receive your learner licence. Lose that L plate the next day.
Did you know? CBTA reduces the time spent on your restricted licence from 18 months for the standard test route to 12 months for CBTA.
Competency Based Training and Assessment (CBTA)
Option 2
Take a practical test at AA or VTNZ. With this option you must wait a minimum of 6 months after you get your learner licence to take the practical riding test.
Improve your riding skills
Take advantage of subsidised Ride Forever on-road coaching to improve your riding skills and knowledge.
Our Bronze full-day (8 hour) course is ideal for riders on a learner licence.
Find out more about the Bronze course
If you've already taken a Bronze course, your Ride Forever trainer can tell you if you're ready to take the restricted CBTA test. If you have not taken a Bronze course, it's recommended you do one to give you the best chance of passing.
The trainer will give you guidance so you'll know if you're ready, and what you will need to focus on to get ready.
Your trainer can also tell you which course will suit you best. Depending on your experience riding motorbikes, that could be Bronze or Silver.
Don’t make things hard for yourself by booking a course you're not ready for. Discuss options with the trainer before committing, and check which course is right for you.
Did you know? You can take two Ride Forever courses in any 12 month period. There must be a 3 month gap between courses.
So, you can take a Bronze course to find out what you need to upskill on or if you're ready for the restricted CBTA. You can take a second course the day before your restricted test as a last minute check.

Boost your knowledge of the road code
The next step is to boost your knowledge of the motorcycle road code to pass the theory test.
Learn to be a safe and responsible rider with the official New Zealand road code for motorcycling. It has all the information you need to get your motorcycle learner licence.
Road code theory test questions
In a theory test you'll be asked two types of questions:
- specialist questions for the type of licence you're applying for
- general questions.
To help you learn the road rules, the NZ Transport Agency|Waka Kotahi has a section that includes most of the test questions you may be asked.
You can use these questions to test yourself, or have a friend or family member test you.
