Video transcript for Basic handling skills test

Transcript

A female voice explains the basic handling skills test with the help of animated pictures.

This video is designed to demonstrate how the basic handling skills test is conducted.

It will show you a typical test course and then explain the four stages of the test.

The course area is about 35 M long and 15 M wide. This is only about half the width of a rugby field and would fit inside the 10m lines.

The test area is set up in a large flat space such as an empty car park. It will be marked out with cones and markers.

Three circles are marked out on the course. They are 5m across and they are 5m apart. These circles are called A, B,
and C.

When the examiner describes what he wants you to do he will refer to these circles as A, B, and C.

There are stages to the test. Each stage has up to five accessible tasks.

Move off straight ride corner stop and park.

The examiner will instruct you on what he wants you to do for a stage, then as you do it he will be watching you and checking you for eight assessment items.

You can attempt each stage only once and if you cannot complete the required manoeuvres you will fail the test.

Only on stage four can you have another attempt if your issue was lack of speed.

The finishing point for each stage becomes the start point for the following stage.

The examiner will be walking the course to meet you at the various stage end points.

We will now look at the requirements of each of the four stages.

The examiner will give you a briefing at the start of the stage and then watch you complete it.

In this video we are showing the rider completing the stage as the examiner is describing it to make it clear to you what you will be doing.

At the start of this stage you will be standing next to your motorcycle at the position shown.

Remember to listen carefully to the instructor and remember his instructions.

You are required to signal when moving off and when going around circle C.

You are to mount the motorcycle, start the engine and then move as follows.

Turn left from a standing start, continue ahead accelerating to approximately 20 km/ hour before slowing and turning around circle C.

Stop at a position level with the bottom of circle C, turn the engine off and stay on the motorcycle.

Your speed and gear choice will be dependent on your motorcycle.

Also you do not need to indicate when stopping.

Remember the instructor will have walked to meet you at the stopping point shown and you should have your engine switched off so you can hear him brief you for stage two.

At the start of the stage you will be sitting on your motorcycle and facing down the course.

You are required to signal when going around each circle A and C and when parking you are to start the engine and then move as follows.

Continue ahead and turn around circle A.

Turn to the left as you come out of that corner towards the starting position.

Continue ahead and make a left turn around circle C.

Continue ahead and stop with the motorcycle back into a right angle.

Park position level with the top of circle A.

The motorcycle should be positioned in the middle of the course facing the left side of the course.

Turn the motorcycle off, place it on the side stand and dismount.

Stay beside the motorcycle.

In stage three you are showing your ability to ride through a series of linking corners left and right smoothly with appropriate speed control.

You are only required to signal when moving.

You are to mount the motorcycle, start the engine and then turn right.

From a standing start continue ahead and turn around circle C.

Complete two figures of eight around circles C and B.

After completing a third loop around the top of circle C continue ahead and stop at the top of circle A.

Turn off the engine and stay on the motorcycle.

In stage four you are showing your ability to ride through a corner at increased speeds and then to demonstrate your ability to break quickly and safely.

You do not need to signal during this stage.

Turn around circle A.

Continue ahead increasing your speed to 20 km/h and come to an emergency stop when I make this signal.

If you are not riding fast enough when coming out of circle C, instead of signalling the stop, you will be directed to proceed back around the course and signalled to stop on the second run.

Writing faults will be noted on both the first and if necessary second runs and will be recorded.

The instructor will now give you a debrief and advise you if you have passed or failed.
