Person one: A lot of crashes happen at intersections. So what can you do to avoid a nasty surprise, or worse? The two main things to concentrate on are:
(Text appears on bottom of screen “Correct road positioning to see and be seen.” Changes to “Be aware of traffic, pedestrians and other hazards.” Text disappears.)
Correct road positioning to see and be seen.
Being aware of traffic, pedestrians and other hazards.
Let’s go through it.
(Drone shot of motorcycle following car. Text appears on bottom of screen “Select the correct road position to see and be seen.” Close up shot of back of bike behind car. View changes to car and following bike driving into camera. Text changes to “Make sure to give yourself enough time and space to react to hazards.” A car cuts in front of the camera from a side street on the right, car and bike drive out of frame. Cuts to drone footage of car pulling up to give way on a road to the right, the car and following bike drive out of frame. Text disappears.)
When following a car, the best road position is usually in the right wheel track. It lets you see ahead to scan for other traffic, pedestrians and hazards. It also puts you in the best position to be seen by other road users. Maintain a slightly longer than normal following distance between you and the car in front so it doesn’t obscure you from being seen and allows you to see ahead and around. Extra space also gives you time to react to anything unexpected.
(Changes to perspective of the motorcyclist following car. Motorcyclist scans to their right to see car waiting to turn out of side street. Perspective changes to looking at motorcyclist as they’re riding. View changes to shot motorcyclist looking right. Changes to view of front of bike as they approach the side street, bike drives out of frame.)
Approaching an intersection with a road to the right, scan to the right to see if it’s clear or if there’s a vehicle that may turn into your lane. Once through the intersection, stay vigilant and keep scanning ahead for other potential hazards. Be ready to react.
At intersections, maintain a safe following distance, be in the correct road position and be aware of potential hazards around you.
