Person one: You’re riding the open road, enjoying every minute. Then… you come up behind a truck. You want to pass, but overtaking other vehicles, particularly long ones, it a real source of danger.
(Video of motorbike riding behind a white truck. The motorbike pulls out and passes. These words appear on screen: “Remember the ‘4P’ principle: Position, Pull out, Pass, Pull in”.)
Here’s something to memorise: the ‘4P’ principle – Position, Pull out, Pass, Pull in.
(Drone footage of back of bike riding away after passing.)
Let’s see how it works:
(Bike on road, riding into camera. Words on screen “First ‘P’ – Position”. Video changes to motorcyclists point of view as they approach a white truck on the road in front of them. Text disappears. Video changes to view of motorcyclist riding bike. Changes to a view of the back of the bike and truck.)
First ‘P’: Position. Get in position for the clearest view ahead. This may involve hanging back from the vehicle in front and checking down the left hand side, as well as down the right. You should be in the right gear to accelerate and be ready to go. As you approach for a potential overtake, scan your surroundings for hazards. Check your mirrors for any traffic coming up behind you. Does it all look clear? If so, indicate right, do a head check, then –
(Motorcyclist looks behind for any traffic. Text on screen – “Second ‘P’ – Pull out”. Video changes to motorcyclist riding towards camera, pulling into the oncoming lane. Text disappears. Motorbike approaches truck.)
Second ‘P’: Pull out to give yourself an unobstructed view of the road ahead. Hold off accelerating until you’ve pulled out and confirmed that the road ahead is clear. If it’s not, slip back into position. Remember: the bigger the vehicle, the bigger the passing distance.
(Text appears “Third ‘P’ – Pass”. Motorbike passes truck, motorcyclist indicates and does a check behind them to see they are in front of the truck. Text appears “Fourth ‘P’ – Pull in”. Motorcyclist moves to the correct side of the road, in front of the truck.)
Third ‘P’: Pass. Get the overtaking done quickly and safely. While passing, keep your momentum up. Once you can see the vehicles left headlight in your mirrors, indicate left, do a head check to make sure you are well clear, and complete the 4 ‘P’ principle: Pull in.
(Footage of motorcyclist overtaking truck from behind. Text reads “Remember the ‘4P’ principle: Position, Pull out, Pass, Pull in”. Screen goes black with Ride Forever.co.nz, the ACC and Ride Forever logos on screen.)
