World Highways is not the sort of publication you see gracing the shelves of your local PaperPlus. It’s a professionals-only kind of journal, usually covering the more arcane aspects of road construction, maintenance and operation. But a recent report caught our eye and we thought it would be worth sharing with our fellow riders because so much of what it says is fascinating.
The magazine reports on a recent OECD-ITF report informed by input from the Federation of European Motorcyclists’ Associations, the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (World Motorcycle Sport’s Governing body) and FIM Europe. It’s the result of an idea by the European Union to get riders to help shape the safety strategy for powered two wheelers in Europe.
If that sounds breathtakingly sensible, you should see the results of the report. Should the recommendations actually be implemented, there would seem to be some interesting times ahead. Perhaps the most fundamental tenet of the report is that “powered two wheelers (PTWs) are becoming an important component of the transport system and therefore need to be properly integrated into mobility plans.”
Yes, you read that correctly. Motorbikes, scooters and mopeds may finally get the recognition they deserve for reducing congestion and pollution while boosting mobility, productivity and efficiency.
